A weeklong residential summer school for emerging translators in South Asian languages

Case Study

The South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT) Project, in association with the American Institute for Lankan Studies, successfully hosted SummerSALT, a weeklong residential summer school for emerging translators in South Asian languages.

The program was held from August 5-9, 2024, at Cinnamon Grand, Colombo, Sri Lanka, and featured five workshops:
● Bangla led by Arunava Sinha, with guest writer Shaheen Akhtar
● Hindi-Urdu led by Daisy Rockwell, with guest writer Asghar Wajahat
● Tamil led by Sumathy Sivamohan, with guest writer Sivanu Manoharan
● Multilingual Poetry led by Ranjit Hoskote
● Multilingual Prose led by Tejaswini Niranjana

The keynote event featured a conversation between 2022 Booker Prize winner Shehan Karunatilaka and 2022 International Booker Prize winner Geetanjali Shree. The plenary session on Sri Lanka’s translation and publishing landscape, moderated by Dr. Madubhashini Ratnayake, included insights from Prof. Liyanage Amarakeerthi and Sivalingam Anusha.

SummerSALT was an initiative by the University of Chicago, in partnership with the American Institute for Lankan Studies Colombo (AILS).

A typical day includes about 4.5 hours of workshopping plus a plenary session. Participants met publishers, authors, and of course fellow translators, accomplished experts as well as those just starting out.
