The British Council Sri Lanka and Alumni UK successfully hosted two crucial professional development events, “Passions to Professionals: Side Hustles and Entrepreneurship” and “The UK Career Crossroads – Where did you end up?”, aimed at empowering UK alumni in Sri Lanka. The “Passions to Professionals” event provided a strategic blueprint for transforming personal interests into commercial ventures, featuring a keynote on intelligent scaling and investor readiness, and advice on defining a unique niche and using high impact storytelling for professional branding. Discussions also covered establishing Day One financial discipline and the strategic value of Intrapreneurship applying an entrepreneurial mindset within an existing role.
The “UK Career Crossroads” event addressed career pivots, affirming that non-subject specific skills acquired in the UK, such as analytical rigour and a growth mindset, are the most valuable foundations for success in new sectors, regardless of the initial UK subject. The panellists normalised career changes, encouraging attendees to view pivoting as a normal part of professional evolution. Across both gatherings, the key takeaway emphasised the competitive advantage provided by their UK qualifications and the critical role of the Alumni UK network in opening doors, providing credibility, and supporting successful career transitions and entrepreneurial ambitions.
